Founders ask one question before almost any other: how long until I can trade? A Dubai business setup timeline has no single answer, because it is not one process. It is a chain of steps, and each step has its own owner and its own clock. Some take minutes. Others depend on a bank or a government department that you do not control.
This guide breaks the chain into stages and gives each one a range, with the source. Where no one publishes a time, I say so instead of inventing one. It is written for founders in the planning stage who want to know how long each step takes before they commit to a date.

The Short Answer
The licence can take minutes or about two weeks. The full setup, including tax registration, usually takes several weeks. The two steps that no one can promise are the bank account and any approval from an outside authority. A sound Dubai business setup timeline treats the licence date as the starting line for the rest, not the finish.
Four published figures anchor the plan:
- Instant licence: issued within five minutes, per the Dubai Media Office.
- Free zone setup (DMCC example): about 10 working days overall, per DMCC.
- Corporate tax registration: an estimated 20 business days for the FTA to complete it, per the Federal Tax Authority.
- Bank account: no official time. The bank decides.
The Dubai Business Setup Timeline, Stage by Stage
Most setups pass through the same stages. The table shows each stage of the Dubai business setup timeline and what is published for it. Read the last column first: a figure from the authority itself is stronger than a figure from a marketing page.
| Stage | Range | Source or note |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Choose the structure | Your decision. No published time. | Decide free zone or mainland first. See free zone or mainland. |
| 2. Name, activity and documents | No published time. | Passport copies and a clear activity description save days later. |
| 3. Licence issued | Minutes to about 2 weeks | Instant licence: five minutes (Dubai Media Office). DMCC: about 10 working days overall. |
| 4. Corporate tax registration | 20 business days (FTA estimate) | Free of charge. Starts when the FTA receives a complete application. |
| 5. Bank account | No published time | The bank decides. Ask the bank for its own estimate. |
| 6. Visas and Emirates ID | No fixed figure used here | Authorities set the pace. Check ICP for the current service time. |
Trade Licence Approval Time
Trade licence approval time depends on the route and on the activity. Three examples show the spread.
Instant licence. The Dubai Media Office describes the service as letting owners obtain a licence in one step within five minutes through invest.dubai.ae. It covers four legal forms: limited liability company, one-person LLC, sole proprietorship and civil company. That release is from November 2021, so confirm the current rules on the portal before you rely on it. See the Dubai Media Office release.
Free zone example. DMCC says company registration typically takes around 10 working days, depending on documents and approvals. Once setup is complete, it says the e-licence is issued within 2-3 working days. Read both figures together: the 10 days is the whole process, not an extra wait. See DMCC’s setup page.
Fast-licence marketing. Meydan Free Zone advertises a licence in under 60 minutes through its Fawri product. That claim is on Meydan’s own site. Treat it as the best case for a standard activity with complete papers.
None of these figures include an outside approval. If your activity is regulated, the approving authority sets its own time, and the licence waits for it. This is the main reason that how long to set up a company in Dubai has no single answer.
Corporate Tax Registration
Once you hold a licence, you register for corporate tax through EmaraTax. The FTA lists the service as free of charge. It gives about 25 minutes as the time to submit the application, and 20 business days for the FTA to complete it from the date it receives a complete application. These figures are on the FTA service page.
That makes tax registration the longest published step in the Dubai business setup timeline after the licence. It does not have to block trading, but you should file early. Deadlines depend on your licence date, and I cover them in the corporate tax registration deadline guide.
Bank Account Opening Time
Bank account opening time is the step founders underestimate most in a Dubai business setup timeline. No authority publishes a standard figure. Each bank runs its own review, may ask for more documents, and may ask to meet the owners. Some applications are declined.
For that reason I do not give a number. Instead, build in slack and apply with a complete file. My guide to the corporate bank account in the UAE explains what banks ask for and why applications stall. If an adviser guarantees an account or a date, read how to vet a business setup adviser before you pay.
Visas and Emirates ID
Residence visas and Emirates ID run on their own clocks inside the Dubai business setup timeline. According to the UAE Government portal, you can apply for a new Emirates ID through the ICP website or an accredited typing centre, and you may need to visit a service centre to give biometric details. It also says the 24-hour urgent service is for UAE and GCC nationals, and that other residents can use it only to replace a card. So a first-time expatriate card does not get the urgent route.
Visa processing times change, so I do not quote one. Check the ICP service page the week you apply. For the routes open to founders, see UAE residency options for founders. If you plan to sponsor staff, read about hiring your first team in the UAE so visas and payroll fit your dates.
A Worked Example With Sourced Numbers
Here is how the published figures combine into a Dubai business setup timeline. This is an illustration built only from the numbers above, not a promise. It assumes a free zone company on the DMCC pattern, a five-day working week and no outside approval.
| Step | Time |
|---|---|
| Company registration and licence (DMCC) | About 10 working days |
| Corporate tax registration (FTA estimate) | Up to 20 business days |
| Total of these two steps, in sequence | About 30 working days, or six working weeks |
| Bank account, visas, Emirates ID | Not included: no figure published |
Read the last row carefully. The six weeks cover only the steps with a published time. Your real Dubai business setup timeline is longer, and the bank step could be the longest part. Some steps can overlap, for example you can prepare bank documents while the FTA reviews your tax application, so the true total may be shorter than the sum.
What Slows the Process Down
Delays to a Dubai business setup timeline come from a short list of causes. Each one waits on someone else.
- Incomplete documents. An incomplete file stalls the process. The FTA counts its 20 business days only from a complete application.
- Outside approvals. A regulated activity needs another authority to agree before the licence is final.
- The bank. It reviews your company, owners and activity on its own schedule.
- Changing your mind. A switch from free zone to mainland, or a new activity, resets stages two and three.
The fix is dull and effective. Decide the structure once, prepare one complete file, and ask every provider for a written timing before you pay.
Limits of this article. I read the DMCC page, the Dubai Media Office release, the FTA service page and the UAE Government portal on 13 October 2026. The DET and ICP service pages did not open to my automated requests, so I give no official mainland licence or visa times. The instant licence release is from 2021. Times change, so confirm each with the authority. This is general information, not legal advice. I run an advisory business, Goldvest Horizon Group, so I have an interest in this subject.
FAQ
How long does it take to set up a company in Dubai?
It depends on the route. Dubai’s instant licence is described by the Dubai Media Office as issued within five minutes. A free zone such as DMCC says its full process typically takes about 10 working days. Add bank, visa and tax steps, and a realistic Dubai business setup timeline runs to several weeks.
How long does trade licence approval take in Dubai?
There is no single figure. The Dubai Media Office says an instant licence is issued within five minutes, and DMCC says its e-licence follows within 2-3 working days of completing setup. Activities that need an outside approval take longer, because that authority sets its own pace.
Can I open a company in Dubai in one day?
Sometimes, for the licence only. Meydan Free Zone advertises a licence in under 60 minutes, and Dubai has an instant licence. Those figures cover the licence itself, which is only the first part of a Dubai business setup timeline. They do not include a bank account, visas, Emirates ID or tax registration, which each follow their own timelines.
How long does a UAE bank account take to open?
No official time exists. Each bank decides on its own review, and it may ask for extra documents or a meeting. Plan for the account to be the least predictable step in your Dubai business setup timeline, and apply with a complete file.
How long does corporate tax registration take?
The Federal Tax Authority lists the service as free, with about 25 minutes to submit the application. It estimates 20 business days for the FTA to complete it from the date it receives a complete application. The clock starts only once the application is complete.
Does a free zone licence arrive faster than a mainland licence?
Not always. Both routes can be quick for simple activities. The published figures in this Dubai business setup timeline are examples, not a ranking. Your activity, your documents and any outside approval usually matter more than the zone or the mainland label.
What slows a Dubai company setup the most?
Three things slow a Dubai business setup timeline most: incomplete documents, activities that need an outside approval, and the bank account. Each of these waits on someone else. A complete file, one named point of contact and an adviser who sends written timings help more than any shortcut.
Your Next Step
Write down your target trading date, then work backwards using the table above to draft your own Dubai business setup timeline. Mark each step as published, estimated or unknown.
